Maths

Our curriculum intent for mathematics reflects the purpose and aims of the national curriculum by helping our pupils to:

● become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual  understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
● reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
● solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

NSPCC Number Day

Every year in February, we take part in the NSPCC Number Day. Children and staff are encouraged to raise money for the charity by arriving at school dressed as something mathematical or number-themed. Throughout the day, the children are encouraged to take part in mathematical activities relating to all aspects of the curriculum.

Doddle Maths Challenges

At St John’s this year, we are continuing to use DoodleMaths and DoodleTables!

Doodle builds confidence and ability in maths by creating every child a personalised work programme tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. Using Doodle, at home, for just 10 minutes a day is proven to help children make three months of progress in just one month!

Every week, classes compete to be the Top Doodling Class at St John’s (this is celebrating in Purple Pages). Children should aim to remain in the green zone to support their class.
